Job Description:

Job Description: Financial Process Consultant – Finance, Banking & Insurance Job Industry, Sydney

The Financial Process Consultant in Sydney plays a vital role in evaluating, designing, and optimising financial processes across banking, insurance, and other financial service institutions. This position is essential in identifying inefficiencies, compliance gaps, and automation opportunities within financial workflows to enhance operational effectiveness and regulatory adherence. Consultants are often involved in enterprise-wide transformation projects, offering expert guidance on how to improve end-to-end financial functions such as budgeting, reporting, and transaction management.

Key responsibilities include conducting detailed process assessments, mapping existing workflows, and collaborating with stakeholders to redesign or streamline financial operations. The consultant provides recommendations grounded in best practices and data analysis, and supports the implementation of new procedures, technologies, or control frameworks. The role may also involve advising on risk mitigation strategies and helping institutions align processes with evolving standards such as IFRS or Basel requirements.

The consultant often works cross-functionally with finance teams, auditors, compliance officers, and IT personnel to ensure changes are practical, scalable, and aligned with broader business objectives. As part of this, they may deliver training sessions, produce documentation, and assist with change management to ensure successful adoption of new systems or procedures. Digital transformation initiatives, such as the introduction of ERP systems or automation tools, are often key components of their remit.

This role requires an in-depth understanding of both technical financial systems and human workflows within financial institutions. Based in Sydney, the consultant supports the transformation and optimisation of financial operations in a dynamic and highly regulated industry. Their work leads to improved accuracy, cost reduction, faster reporting cycles, and more robust compliance frameworks across Australia's financial services landscape.

Job Requirements: Financial Process Consultant – Finance, Banking & Insurance Job Industry, Sydney

Candidates applying for the Financial Process Consultant role should hold a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related discipline. Additional qualifications in project management (e.g. PRINCE2 or PMP), Lean Six Sigma, or financial systems (such as SAP, Oracle, or Workday) are considered strong assets. Previous experience in a consulting role or in a financial process improvement capacity is highly preferred.

Applicants must demonstrate a thorough understanding of financial processes, including procure-to-pay, order-to-cash, and record-to-report cycles. Familiarity with Australian financial regulations and reporting requirements, including APRA and ASIC standards, is critical. Knowledge of international compliance frameworks and experience with internal control design will further strengthen a candidate’s suitability.

The ideal candidate will possess excellent analytical skills and the ability to identify bottlenecks, risks, and improvement opportunities within complex processes. They should be comfortable using process mapping tools (e.g. Visio, Lucidchart) and data analysis platforms to assess system performance and propose effective changes. Strong report-writing, presentation, and documentation skills are essential for conveying technical findings to executive stakeholders.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills are also crucial, as the consultant will frequently collaborate with finance leaders, compliance teams, and operational managers. The ability to build consensus and lead discussions during transformation projects is an important aspect of the role. Time management and the ability to juggle multiple process reviews or implementation initiatives are key to success in a dynamic consulting environment.

A proactive mindset, commitment to continuous improvement, and strong ethical judgement are expected. Successful candidates will demonstrate adaptability to changing financial technologies, curiosity about emerging trends such as AI in finance, and the willingness to guide organisations through transitions that promote efficiency, transparency, and compliance.
