Job Description:

The Pneumatic Tire Roller Operator, known in Bordeaux as an Air Roller Technician, is tasked with operating specialized compaction equipment fitted with rubber tires to ensure flexible and uniform compaction across roadwork and construction sites. This equipment is crucial in compacting materials such as hot mix asphalt and granular base layers, especially in projects where kneading action is essential to achieve tight, stable surfaces. This role supports the overall integrity and durability of roads, highways, and industrial pads.

The operator is responsible for positioning and steering the pneumatic roller in a systematic and overlapping pattern, applying the correct amount of pressure and wheel passes to conform to engineering standards. The flexibility offered by pneumatic tires allows for better material bonding and sealing, especially on fresh asphalt surfaces. The operator must understand the nuances of tire pressure adjustment, which directly affects compaction depth and quality.

Daily responsibilities also include performing inspections on equipment functionality, including checking tire pressure levels, hydraulic systems, steering mechanisms, and braking performance. Operators are expected to document machine conditions, maintain clean equipment, and ensure all moving components are properly lubricated and in working order. Preventative maintenance is often done in collaboration with mechanical teams, with the operator playing a key role in identifying early signs of wear or malfunction.

Given the fast-paced and dynamic environment of road construction, the Air Roller Technician must remain alert and responsive to site supervisors’ directions, adapting to changes in material behavior, weather conditions, and job priorities. Their presence on site is critical during the intermediate rolling phase following paver passes and prior to final finish rolling.

Working in Bordeaux, a city with ongoing infrastructure expansion and road modernization, this role contributes significantly to maintaining high-quality surfaces that can withstand variable traffic loads and environmental stressors.

Job Requirement:

The Air Roller Technician position in Bordeaux requires a detailed understanding of pneumatic tire roller machinery and its specific application within heavy construction and road paving operations. Candidates must be adept at controlling multi-wheel compaction systems that use adjustable tire pressure to achieve consistent coverage and density across surfaces being treated. Knowledge of how to alternate rolling patterns and adjust ballast weight for project-specific requirements is essential.

Candidates should have excellent equipment-handling skills, ensuring safe and accurate navigation around active job sites, including narrow corridors, curves, and slope transitions. Familiarity with site compaction standards and the ability to interpret compaction sequences and material behavior are important. Operators must possess the ability to communicate effectively with ground personnel, foremen, and engineers to maintain workflow efficiency and operational safety.

Routine mechanical checks are a daily part of the role, requiring a practical understanding of pneumatic and hydraulic systems, tire condition assessment, and engine functionality. Operators should be able to log performance data, report faults, and assist with minor onsite adjustments to avoid operational delays. They are also expected to apply safety best practices consistently, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and following hazard mitigation protocols.

Time management is crucial, especially during peak paving windows when material temperature and compaction timing are critical to pavement quality. Operators must demonstrate the ability to work independently yet remain synchronized with other machine operators, including paver, screed, and finish roller teams. Adaptability to weather conditions, material behavior, and last-minute project changes is a key attribute.

In addition, the job demands physical stamina to endure long shifts in outdoor environments, often in high heat or fluctuating weather typical of the Bordeaux region. Reliability, precision, and a commitment to operational excellence are expected, ensuring that each project benefits from durable and stable compaction results.
