Job Description:
The Camel Care Technician in Christchurch is responsible for the daily husbandry and welfare of camels in specialized farm or tourism-based environments. The technician assists in feeding, watering, grooming, and monitoring the health of camels, ensuring that the animals are kept in clean, secure, and enriching environments. Tasks include inspecting hooves and skin for injuries, supporting veterinary treatments, assisting with breeding programs, and preparing camels for rides or shows if part of a tourism operation. The technician may also help train camels in handling routines, and for farms engaged in camel milk production, they assist in milking procedures and hygiene maintenance.
This role is both physically and mentally demanding, requiring patience, observational skills, and confidence in working with large animals. Camels require specialized handling techniques, and the technician must be trained to identify behavioral cues, manage dominant animals, and ensure low-stress interactions. The role also includes facility upkeep, record-keeping, and liaising with veterinarians for regular check-ups or emergency care. Depending on the nature of the facility, public interaction may also be part of the job.
Job Requirement:
Candidates must have prior experience working with large animals—preferably camels—or formal training in exotic or livestock animal care. A qualification in animal science, zoology, or veterinary technology is an advantage. At least 1–2 years of experience in camel or similar animal husbandry is expected. Strong observational skills, knowledge of camel behavior, and physical strength are required. Candidates must be able to work outdoors year-round, follow strict animal welfare standards, and adapt to unique care needs. Familiarity with camel milking or breeding practices is an added benefit.
