Job Description:
The Animal Care Attendant supports the daily well-being of pets or domestic animals within private homes in Dunedin. Duties include cleaning animal enclosures, preparing and serving food, replenishing water, grooming, and providing mental stimulation through play and social interaction. They may also assist in administering medications, managing vet appointments, and observing behavioral changes that may indicate illness. The attendant is expected to maintain high hygiene standards in all pet areas and follow safety guidelines while handling animals.
This role is physically demanding and requires patience, compassion, and a structured approach to animal care routines. Attention to detail is essential, especially when managing multiple pets or those with special dietary or medical needs. The attendant may also help with training reinforcement, maintaining pet supplies, and supporting household tasks related to animal care. This is a highly responsible position that requires the ability to work independently and to communicate effectively with pet owners. Flexibility with shifts, including weekends and early mornings, is often necessary.
Job Requirement:
Education: Secondary education preferred; animal care or vet tech coursework a plus
Experience: Minimum 1 year in animal shelters, pet boarding, or home pet care roles
Skills: Animal observation, cleaning and feeding, grooming, time management
Other Requirements: Comfortable with various species, physically active, references required, ability to follow care protocols
