Job Description:

A Grounds Caretaker in Christchurch is responsible for the overall upkeep, safety, and appearance of large residential properties or private estates, including gardens, lawns, driveways, outdoor structures, and recreational areas. This role encompasses a wide range of maintenance activities such as mowing, pruning, leaf and debris removal, pathway clearing, and upkeep of external fixtures like fences, gates, lighting, and irrigation systems. The caretaker ensures that outdoor spaces remain safe, functional, and visually pleasing throughout the year.

In addition to landscaping duties, the caretaker may monitor and maintain minor repair works involving tools, machinery, and infrastructure such as walkways, outdoor furniture, or drainage systems. They coordinate with service providers or contractors for more complex maintenance jobs and oversee deliveries of gardening supplies, equipment, or seasonal décor. The role may also involve pool care, pest management, snow removal in winter months, and occasional pet or livestock care.

The caretaker works closely with estate managers or homeowners to carry out scheduled maintenance tasks, emergency repairs, or special projects. A strong sense of property stewardship, self-motivation, and practical problem-solving ability are key attributes. This role often includes early start times, occasional weekend duties, and physical labor in varied weather.

Job Requirement:

Ideal candidates will have previous experience in estate or facility groundskeeping, landscaping, or outdoor maintenance. Knowledge of irrigation systems, lawn care equipment, safety procedures, and seasonal gardening cycles is essential. A trade certificate in horticulture, landscaping, or groundskeeping is beneficial. Good physical fitness, attention to detail, and the ability to perform manual labor are necessary. A valid driver’s license is typically required. The ability to communicate clearly, follow maintenance schedules, and take initiative in identifying repair or improvement needs is important. Dependability, discretion, and respect for the private nature of the property are essential traits.
