Job Description:

An Art Restorer in Basel plays a critical role in preserving and conserving artwork, ensuring that cultural heritage remains intact for future generations. Working in the Creative Art & Design industry, the Art Restorer examines, analyzes, and restores paintings, sculptures, and other artworks using specialized tools, chemicals, and techniques. This role involves meticulous attention to historical accuracy, material integrity, and aesthetic detail. Based in Basel—a prominent European art hub with renowned museums and galleries—the Art Restorer collaborates with curators, historians, chemists, and conservators. Tasks include cleaning surfaces, repairing damage, stabilizing materials, retouching pigments, and maintaining archival documentation. Advanced imaging and microscopic techniques may be used for diagnostics. The Art Restorer must also ensure compliance with ethical guidelines and non-invasive restoration practices. In Basel’s culturally rich landscape, this role contributes significantly to safeguarding priceless artworks from degradation, environmental damage, or aging. Whether working on classical oil paintings, rare manuscripts, or contemporary installations, the Art Restorer combines scientific knowledge with artistic sensitivity to ensure each piece retains its historical and visual integrity.

Job Requirement:

  • Degree in Art Conservation, Fine Arts, or Art History

  • Specialized training in restoration techniques and material science

  • Experience restoring historical and modern artwork

  • Knowledge of chemical solvents and cleaning agents used in art care

  • Familiarity with conservation ethics and minimal intervention principles

  • Skill in retouching, filling, and stabilizing art materials

  • Use of diagnostic tools like UV, IR imaging, and microscopy

  • Attention to fine detail and delicate manual dexterity

  • Understanding of artistic styles, techniques, and historical contexts

  • Familiarity with Basel’s museum and gallery landscape

  • Fluency in German; English proficiency desirable

  • Experience in handling and storing fragile artworks

  • Excellent documentation and reporting skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively with curators and scientists

  • Commitment to preserving cultural heritage and artistic integrity

  • Knowledge of climate-controlled preservation environments

  • Project management and time estimation skills

  • Experience with conservation of varied media (oil, canvas, paper, wood)

  • Knowledge of international conservation standards
