Job Description:

The Apparel Pattern Designer in Winnipeg plays a vital role in transforming fashion concepts into production-ready garment patterns. This position involves working closely with fashion designers, product developers, and garment technicians to create accurate patterns that define the shape, fit, and style of clothing. Responsibilities include drafting initial patterns by hand or using computer-aided design (CAD) software, modifying existing templates, and ensuring garments meet required size specifications.

The designer must also grade patterns to create size ranges, test prototypes, and make adjustments following fitting sessions. Attention to detail is essential to ensure accuracy in seam allowances, darts, and garment proportions. In addition, the Apparel Pattern Designer ensures patterns are production-friendly, enabling efficient fabric use and streamlined sewing processes.

This role requires a blend of creativity and technical precision, as well as knowledge of different fabrics and their behavior during cutting and stitching. Collaboration with cutters, sewing technicians, and quality teams is key to ensuring garments meet design intent, quality standards, and consumer expectations. The Apparel Pattern Designer is central to Winnipeg’s apparel and fashion industry, bridging the gap between design and manufacturing.

Job Requirement:

Education: Diploma or degree in fashion design, garment technology, or textiles required.

Experience: 3–5 years of experience in apparel pattern design or garment production.

Skills:

Proficiency in pattern drafting, grading, and adjustments.

Knowledge of CAD pattern-making software (e.g., Gerber, Lectra, Optitex).

Strong understanding of garment construction and tailoring techniques.

Ability to analyze and modify patterns for different sizes and fits.

Precision and creativity in balancing design with production needs.

Physical Requirements: Good vision, manual dexterity, and ability to handle detailed design tasks.

Language: Proficiency in English required; additional languages are an asset in Winnipeg’s diverse market.

Other Requirements:

Strong problem-solving skills for fitting and size adjustments.

Ability to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines.

Collaboration skills for working with designers, cutters, and production staff.

Commitment to producing high-quality, production-ready garment patterns.
