Job Description:
The ASL Interpreter plays a vital role in facilitating communication between Deaf or Hard of Hearing individuals and hearing persons in various settings such as educational institutions, hospitals, legal environments, government services, and public events. This professional is proficient in American Sign Language and ensures accurate, impartial, and confidential interpretation of spoken language into ASL and vice versa. The interpreter must also adapt communication styles based on the audience's age, cultural background, and context. The position may require both simultaneous and consecutive interpretation and may be conducted in person or via remote platforms. In addition to interpretation, the role may involve collaborating with accessibility teams to ensure inclusive communication support and advising on best practices for inclusive service delivery.
Job Requirement:
A bachelor's degree in Interpretation, Deaf Studies, or a related field, along with certification from a recognized body (such as RID or equivalent) is essential. A minimum of 2 years of experience in professional ASL interpretation is required. Strong understanding of Deaf culture, ASL grammar, and interpretation ethics is crucial. Candidates should have excellent listening, memory retention, and communication skills. Proficiency with video remote interpreting platforms and experience working across various industries are advantages. A flexible schedule and willingness to travel or work outside regular hours may also be required.
