Job Description:
The Coating Technician in Auckland is tasked with applying specialized coatings to components and surfaces to improve durability, corrosion resistance, and wear tolerance. These coatings may include thermal spray, ceramic, anti-corrosive, powder, or galvanizing layers, depending on the application. The technician works with automated coating machines or manual tools, depending on the process, and performs surface preparation tasks such as degreasing, blasting, or masking. Common industries employing coating technicians include aerospace, marine, construction, and industrial manufacturing. Technicians monitor process parameters, adjust equipment settings, and inspect coatings for defects like pinholes, under-coverage, or peeling. Post-coating testing may involve adhesion tests, thickness gauging, and hardness measurements to ensure the finish meets quality specifications.
This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, precision, and understanding of materials science. Coating technicians often work in cleanrooms or controlled environments to maintain product integrity and prevent contamination. Technicians must also maintain records of batch numbers, processes used, and compliance with customer or industry standards.
Job Requirement:
Education: Diploma or technical training in materials engineering, coatings technology, or industrial processes.
Experience: At least 3 years in coating application, surface treatment, or a similar role.
Skills: Knowledge of spray systems (airless, electrostatic), masking, baking/curing procedures, and coating inspection methods. Ability to read technical specs and maintain equipment.
Other Requirements: Adherence to cleanroom practices (if applicable), familiarity with ISO/ASTM standards for coatings, and safety procedures for handling hazardous materials.
