Job Description:
The Tower Crane Operator in Wellington is responsible for operating high-rise cranes to lift and move heavy construction materials such as steel beams, concrete forms, mechanical equipment, and prefabricated components. These cranes are commonly used in large infrastructure, commercial, and residential construction projects. The operator controls the crane from a cab at the top of the tower or remotely from the ground, using levers, pedals, and joysticks to maneuver loads with precision. Pre-shift responsibilities include conducting safety inspections, verifying load capacities, checking weather conditions, and confirming that the crane’s structure is secure. During operation, the operator communicates closely with signalers, riggers, and site supervisors to ensure safe and efficient material movement.
The job requires high concentration, depth perception, and a strong understanding of load dynamics, wind resistance, and balance. Operators must be able to read load charts, interpret site plans, and respond quickly to emergencies or unexpected events. Safety is paramount, and tower crane operators must strictly follow national and site-specific construction safety protocols.
Job Requirement:
Education: Secondary school completion with a formal certification in crane operation (e.g., NZQA unit standards or equivalent).
Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of crane operation experience, especially in high-rise or large-scale construction.
Skills: Excellent spatial awareness, knowledge of rigging practices, and proficiency in load handling. Ability to communicate effectively via radio or hand signals.
Other Requirements: Valid crane operator license, physical fitness, ability to work at heights, and thorough understanding of construction site safety standards and emergency protocols.
