Job Description:
The Ambulance Transport Driver is responsible for the non-emergency medical transfer of patients who require mobility support, routine check-ups, dialysis, rehabilitation visits, or hospital discharge in Dunedin. Unlike emergency drivers, this role emphasizes safe, scheduled, and compassionate patient service. The driver is tasked with preparing the ambulance before each shift, conducting routine safety inspections, ensuring the cleanliness of the interior, and assisting patients with boarding and disembarking. The driver ensures that mobility aids like wheelchairs, stretchers, and oxygen cylinders are secured during transport. Coordination with dispatch teams and patient care staff is essential to ensure schedules are maintained and patient needs are communicated. In some instances, the driver may accompany patients into clinics and wait during appointments. This role provides critical support for healthcare continuity, especially for elderly or chronically ill patients.
Job Requirement:
Applicants must possess a valid full driver’s license, ideally with a Passenger (P) endorsement. A certificate in healthcare transportation or support work is preferred. Experience in patient handling, elderly care, or community health transport is beneficial. Candidates must be physically capable of assisting patients and operating mobility devices. Strong interpersonal skills, punctuality, and knowledge of vehicle safety procedures are vital. Sensitivity to the needs of vulnerable patients and a calm, respectful approach to service delivery are key qualities for this role.
