The Blood Collection Technician in Wellington is a vital member of the clinical laboratory team, responsible for drawing blood from patients for diagnostic testing, transfusions, or donations. This role includes preparing patients for venipuncture, verifying patient identities, labeling blood specimens, and ensuring samples are transported quickly and safely to the laboratory for processing. The technician works across inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, and emergency departments, often interacting with patients who are anxious or unwell.
In addition to performing phlebotomy procedures, the technician maintains accurate records of collection attempts, monitors inventory of blood collection supplies, and assists with data entry into electronic health systems. They must adhere to strict hygiene and safety standards, especially when dealing with infectious patients. A gentle, reassuring bedside manner is crucial for managing pediatric or elderly patients during the procedure. The technician is also trained in post-collection care, such as applying pressure to puncture sites and managing adverse reactions.
