Job Description:
The Biohazard Disposal Specialist in Auckland plays an essential role in maintaining hospital safety by handling, transporting, and disposing of infectious and hazardous biological materials. This role ensures that clinical waste such as contaminated sharps, pathological specimens, bodily fluids, and infectious cultures are segregated, packaged, and removed in compliance with strict safety and environmental regulations. Working closely with infection control officers and environmental services teams, the specialist collects biohazard containers from designated hospital areas, inspects them for compliance with labeling and packaging standards, and ensures they are safely stored prior to incineration or off-site treatment.
Daily tasks include documenting all disposals, monitoring biohazardous waste levels, disinfecting transport carts, and maintaining waste storage areas to prevent leaks or contamination. The specialist also trains clinical and custodial staff on proper waste segregation techniques and updates safety logs for compliance audits. The position involves working in high-risk environments, requiring the use of full personal protective equipment (PPE) and strict adherence to Ministry of Health and Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) protocols.
Job Requirement:
Candidates should have a high school diploma or equivalent, with prior experience in a hospital or biomedical waste management environment being highly desirable. Strong knowledge of hazardous waste handling, infection control principles, and use of PPE is essential. The role requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and the ability to follow regulatory guidelines precisely. Familiarity with chemical disinfectants and emergency spill procedures is also expected.
