Job Description:
The Directional Drilling Engineer plays a critical role in designing and implementing complex drilling plans that guide wells along precise paths to reach targeted reservoirs. Based in Montreal, this professional applies advanced engineering principles to ensure that wells are drilled accurately, safely, and cost-effectively. Responsibilities include developing directional drilling programs, supervising rig operations, and coordinating with geologists, drilling supervisors, and technical teams to optimize wellbore placement.
The engineer monitors real-time drilling data, evaluates downhole conditions, and makes adjustments to maintain trajectory and maximize production potential. They also oversee the selection and calibration of downhole tools, rotary steerable systems, and measurement-while-drilling (MWD) technologies. Ensuring compliance with Canadian health, safety, and environmental regulations is a fundamental part of the role.
Additionally, the Directional Drilling Engineer prepares post-well reports, conducts performance analyses, and recommends technological improvements for future projects. This position requires excellent problem-solving skills, as the engineer must adapt to changing subsurface conditions and troubleshoot operational issues quickly. With Montreal’s growing involvement in energy projects, this role supports the expansion of sustainable drilling practices and innovative resource extraction strategies across Canada.
Job Requirement:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline. Postgraduate training in directional drilling technology is an asset.
Experience: At least 4–6 years in directional or horizontal drilling operations, including hands-on rig experience. Previous work in Canadian or international drilling projects is preferred.
Skills:
Strong knowledge of directional drilling techniques, tools, and equipment.
Proficiency with MWD/LWD technologies and rotary steerable systems.
Ability to interpret geological and geophysical data.
Expertise in drilling software and real-time monitoring systems.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for downhole challenges.
Effective leadership and communication to coordinate multi-disciplinary teams.
Language: Proficiency in English required; French language skills highly desirable in Montreal-based projects.
Other Requirements:
Willingness to work on rotation schedules and in field-based environments.
Strong commitment to safety and environmental protection.
Valid certifications in H2S Alive, First Aid, and WHMIS.
Ability to travel across Canadian drilling sites as required.
