Job Description:

The Electric Network Planning Specialist is responsible for developing long-term strategies and short-term plans for Ottawa’s electrical distribution and transmission networks. This role ensures that the city’s growing energy demands are met with safe, reliable, and sustainable infrastructure. The specialist conducts capacity planning, demand forecasting, and network performance analysis to guide investment and expansion decisions.

Key responsibilities include evaluating grid capacity, identifying areas for network reinforcement, analyzing load growth patterns, and integrating renewable energy sources into planning models. The Electric Network Planning Specialist prepares technical reports, develops planning models, and ensures all strategies comply with Canadian electrical codes, environmental regulations, and industry best practices.

In Ottawa’s rapidly evolving energy sector, this role plays a critical part in supporting electrification, renewable integration, and smart grid development. Collaboration with engineers, regulatory authorities, and utility stakeholders is essential to align planning strategies with broader energy goals. The position requires analytical thinking, technical expertise, and strong communication skills to balance efficiency, reliability, and sustainability in network planning.

Job Requirement:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems. A master’s degree or P.Eng. designation is an asset.

Experience: 4–7 years in power system planning, distribution network design, or utility operations.

Skills:

Proficiency in power system planning and modeling software (e.g., PSS®E, DIgSILENT, CYME).

Strong knowledge of load forecasting, capacity planning, and renewable energy integration.

Ability to conduct technical studies, including reliability and contingency analysis.

Familiarity with Canadian electrical codes, environmental standards, and utility regulations.

Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and technical writing skills.

Strong teamwork and stakeholder management abilities.

Language: Proficiency in English; French is an asset.
