Job Description:
We are seeking a Bathymetric Survey Specialist to lead hydrographic and seabed mapping operations in Cologne. This role involves overseeing the collection and analysis of depth data from marine and inland water environments to support engineering, dredging, navigation, and environmental projects.
The successful candidate will design and execute bathymetric survey plans using multibeam and single-beam sonar systems, GPS, and motion sensors. Responsibilities include calibration of equipment, data acquisition, quality control, and processing using hydrographic software. You will produce detailed bathymetric charts and contribute to terrain modeling, pipeline routing studies, and hazard detection.
Working in coordination with marine engineers, geoscientists, and project managers, you’ll ensure all operations comply with international hydrographic standards and safety protocols. This position includes offshore and coastal fieldwork, including mobilization of survey vessels and training junior technicians.
This is a technically demanding and rewarding role ideal for professionals with experience in hydrographic surveying, a deep understanding of sonar technologies, and a passion for working on the water.
Job Requirement:
A degree in Hydrography, Geomatics, Marine Geoscience, or related field is required. At least 4–6 years of hands-on experience in bathymetric surveying and marine data collection is essential.
Applicants must demonstrate proficiency with multibeam echo sounders, motion reference units, tide gauges, and positioning systems. Experience with industry-standard processing software such as HYPACK, CARIS, and QINSy is mandatory.
Solid knowledge of IHO standards, hydrographic survey methodologies, and geospatial data integration is required. Experience in project planning, equipment calibration, and data QA/QC procedures is also important.
Strong analytical and communication skills are necessary for technical reporting, chart production, and coordination with clients and regulatory agencies. Fluency in English is essential; German language skills are an asset.
The role demands physical fitness, willingness to travel extensively for offshore assignments, and the ability to work in challenging environments. A valid offshore survival certificate and seafarer’s medical certificate are highly desirable.
