Job Description:

The Asphalt Laying Technician in Wellington is responsible for manually and mechanically applying and leveling hot mix asphalt on road surfaces, driveways, and parking areas. Working as part of a paving crew, the technician assists in material spreading, hand raking, and edge forming, ensuring proper compaction and surface finish. The role requires coordination with the paving machine operator to maintain material flow and control thickness at edges or transitions. Tasks also include checking surface temperature, identifying defects like cold joints or segregation, and applying tack coat or joint sealants where needed. In Wellington’s hilly and urban roadways, precision and edge control are particularly important. After placement, the technician supports the roller crew by preparing hand-finish areas, patching, or compacting tight spaces. The role includes operating plate compactors, screeds, and handheld tools, as well as cleaning equipment and managing material residue.

Job Requirement:

Applicants must have experience in asphalt laying and surface preparation techniques. Familiarity with paving tools, hot mix behavior, and safety measures around hot materials is essential. Physical endurance, ability to work in varying weather, and attention to slope and surface level are necessary. Team coordination and strong awareness of timing during paving operations are critical.
