Job Description:

The Asphalt Roller Driver in Christchurch is responsible for operating heavy roller machinery to compact freshly laid asphalt surfaces, ensuring optimal density, smoothness, and long-term durability. This role involves maneuvering vibrating or static rollers over hot mix asphalt immediately after it is laid by the paving crew. The driver adjusts roller pressure, vibration frequency, and speed based on surface temperature and material type. Responsibilities include pre-operation inspection, maintaining equipment in good working condition, refueling, and cleaning. The driver must be skilled in identifying surface irregularities and taking corrective actions to avoid ruts, cracks, or inconsistencies. Communication with the paving foreman and mat placement technicians is crucial to align compaction with material readiness. In Christchurch, where road maintenance and infrastructure upgrades are frequent, the driver must adapt to varying road conditions, confined urban spaces, and changing weather. The position demands high attention to detail, mechanical awareness, and adherence to strict safety protocols, especially when operating near live traffic zones.

Job Requirement:

Candidates should have experience operating compaction equipment and must hold a valid heavy machinery license. Training in asphalt compaction and knowledge of mix types, rolling patterns, and safety regulations is essential. Physical endurance, awareness of compaction tolerances, and ability to interpret worksite instructions are required. Strong situational awareness and communication skills are beneficial in fast-paced roadwork environments.
