Job Description:
The Asphalt Mix Layer is responsible for the manual spreading, raking, and compaction support of hot mix asphalt during road construction, resurfacing, or repair operations across Wellington. This role includes working with paving crews to distribute asphalt uniformly, correct irregularities, and ensure surface bonding before final compaction. Tasks involve using shovels, rakes, and lutes to level edges, feather joints, and achieve proper thickness and gradient. The mix layer also inspects surfaces for visible flaws, monitors mix temperature, and supports compaction with hand tampers or plate compactors in tight spaces. Coordination with truck drivers, screed operators, and site supervisors is essential to maintain efficiency and safety on busy worksites. The position demands long hours on foot, frequent bending and lifting, and exposure to heat and outdoor conditions. This role suits individuals who can work quickly and precisely under pressure while maintaining a focus on quality surface finish and site safety.
Job Requirement:
Applicants should have at least a high school-level education and 1–3 years of experience in road surfacing, asphalt application, or construction labor. Skills in manual asphalt handling, edge shaping, and tool use are critical. The ability to work around hot materials, follow safety rules, and coordinate in a fast-paced environment is essential. Physical strength, endurance, and alertness around traffic and heavy machinery are also important.
