Job Description:

The Duct Fabrication Specialist in Christchurch is responsible for crafting and assembling air duct systems for HVAC installations, ensuring efficient airflow, thermal regulation, and compliance with mechanical engineering specifications. The role involves interpreting ductwork drawings and fabrication schedules, selecting appropriate sheet metal (galvanized steel, aluminum, stainless steel), cutting and bending materials using shears, press brakes, and rollers, and assembling sections with rivets, screws, welds, or flanges. Duties also include attaching reinforcements, sealing seams to prevent leakage, and labeling components for correct site installation. The specialist works closely with HVAC installers and mechanical engineers to ensure ducting aligns with layout plans and performance criteria. In addition to workshop fabrication, the role may include occasional site visits to assist in duct fitting, modifications, or troubleshooting. Quality control, adherence to fire and airflow standards, and safe use of machinery are central to this position.

Job Requirement:

A trade qualification in sheet metal work or HVAC fabrication is required, with 3–5 years of experience in duct manufacturing. Candidates must have strong skills in reading mechanical drawings and operating fabrication equipment. Knowledge of SMACNA or AS/NZS ducting standards, air pressure classifications, and insulation techniques is essential. Physical fitness, attention to detail, and understanding of occupational health and safety procedures in workshop settings are mandatory. Welding or TIG/MIG experience will be considered a plus.
