Job Description:
The Directional Drilling Engineer in Al Rayyan is responsible for planning and executing non-vertical well paths for hydrocarbon extraction projects across Qatar’s oil and gas fields. This role is central to achieving optimal well placement and maximizing reservoir contact using advanced drilling technologies. Working in collaboration with geologists, drilling engineers, and rig personnel, the engineer ensures accurate borehole trajectories using real-time data and specialized downhole tools.
Core responsibilities include designing directional drilling plans, conducting torque and drag analysis, selecting bottom hole assemblies (BHA), and optimizing well paths through complex geological formations. The engineer oversees field implementation, ensures tool calibration, and provides on-site technical support during drilling operations. Post-drilling, the engineer conducts performance reviews, generates end-of-well reports, and contributes to lessons learned and technical optimization strategies.
This position is critical for horizontal and extended reach drilling (ERD) programs supporting Qatar’s enhanced recovery initiatives. It demands high technical precision, situational awareness, and field adaptability.
Job Requirement:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
Experience: 3–5 years of hands-on directional drilling experience, including horizontal and deviated wells.
Skills:
Proficiency in directional software (e.g., Compass, WellArchitect, Drillbench).
Knowledge of measurement-while-drilling (MWD) and logging-while-drilling (LWD) tools.
Experience with rotary steerable systems (RSS) and geosteering.
Strong analytical skills and ability to adjust well plans in real time.
Competency in downhole telemetry systems and wellbore surveying.
Certifications: Valid IWCF certification preferred; H2S and rig safety training required.
Language: Fluency in English required; Arabic is beneficial.
Other Requirements:
Willingness to travel to onshore and offshore drilling sites on rotation.
Ability to work under pressure and in challenging field conditions.
Strong documentation and reporting skills aligned with Qatari regulatory standards.
