Job Description:
The Marine Propulsion Engineer in Zurich is responsible for the design, development, and optimization of propulsion systems used in marine vessels, playing a key role in ensuring efficient, reliable, and environmentally compliant performance. Working under the Shipbuilding & Ship Machinery industry, this role involves collaboration with naval architects, mechanical engineers, and system designers to integrate propulsion technologies into both commercial and specialized vessels. The engineer oversees system specifications, performs calculations related to power, thrust, and hydrodynamics, and supports testing and validation efforts during sea trials and simulations. In Zurich, a city with advanced engineering research and access to global maritime clients, this role bridges innovation with practical application. The Marine Propulsion Engineer also contributes to retrofitting initiatives for emissions reduction, evaluates emerging technologies such as hybrid and electric propulsion, and ensures adherence to classification society rules and maritime regulations. This position offers a blend of technical design work and hands-on system troubleshooting, often requiring travel to shipyards or test sites.
Job Requirement:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
4+ years of experience in marine propulsion or ship machinery engineering
Proficiency in propulsion system design and marine engine performance analysis
Knowledge of IMO regulations and classification society standards
Familiarity with CAD software and simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS, CFD)
Experience with diesel, electric, or hybrid propulsion systems
Ability to conduct failure analysis and performance optimization
Strong communication and collaboration skills for cross-functional projects
Willingness to travel to ports, shipyards, or test facilities as required
Fluent in English; German proficiency is a plus
